Tools & Supplies
-
-
- A variety of painted/colored leaves from the Acorn & Leaf templates
- Tree branch or stick (about ½ inch diameter and 18 inches long—cleaned and lightly sanded, if needed)
- Yarn or string
- Scissors for cutting twine
- Glue or glue dots
Note: For a mobile visible front and back, double up with a "leaf sandwich" (an identical leaf that you'll paste over the yarn ends in Step 4). To save time, the back leaves can simply be the same size and paper color as the front — no need to paint a full second set.
-
Step 1:
- Find or cut a sturdy tree branch (about ½ inch diameter, 18 inches long).
- Tie a 18-inch piece of twine to each end, knotting securely to create a hanging loop for your mobile.
-
Step 2:
- Cut 5 pieces of twine (18-36 inches long, shorter for branch ends, longer for center) for the leaves.
- Use shorter lengths at the ends and longer in the center for a tiered, balanced mobile.
-
Step 3:
- Fold each piece of twine in half to form a loop. Slip the loop’s folded top over the branch and pull the loose ends through to form a lark’s head knot.
- Space the 5-6 knots evenly across the branch (~2.5 inches apart) for balanced leaf placement.
-
Step 4:
- For each of the yarn strands, attach 2-3 leaves using glue or glue dots.
- Get creative with placement: try a left-right-left pattern on one strand, two larger leaves right-left on another, or mix sizes and directions for a dynamic look.
-
Step 5:
- Glue an identical leaf (unpainted is fine) over the back side of each leaf for a clean "sandwich" that hides the yarn ends.
- Hold the branch by its loop, adjust for balance, and hang to admire!
